REVIEW: The Walking Dead

AMC's The Walking Dead is a tv series about a world when the dead come back to life; zombies. Based on the graphic novel series of the same name by Robert Kirkman, Tony Moore and Charlie Adlard. Now i was instantly excited about this show when i heard of it, simply because of the zombies, because i am a major horror fan, and zombies are one of my favorite horror movie creatures. I love films like 'Dawn of the Dead', 'Resident Evil' and its sequals, as well as horror-comedies, 'Shaun of the Dead' and 'Zombieland'. I was also excited of having zombies in a tv series, rather than in just a movie. After watching the first episode i was in love.

The Walking Dead brought zombies back again, and even though throughout most zombie movies, the zombies themselves don't change much, these zombies still seemed new and fresh. One of the most important factors in a show like this is the characters. Each have to be unique, and interesting, because nobody wants to watch something with characters that are the same, especially when they are faced with a life and death situation, seeing how they react to whats happening around them, loosing people they love and seeing death is incredibly important. The Walking Dead cast has succeeded in all of the above. The cast includes Andrew Lincon (Love Actually & Afterlife), Jon Bernthal (Eastwick & The Class), Sarah Wayne Callies (Prison Break), Laurie Holden (The Shield & Silent Hill), Jeffrey DeMunn & Steven Yeun.

One of the main concepts i find intesting about the show, is that as it still follows the way a typical zombie film works, but then will have an whole extra part. I break a zombie film down to the following parts.

1.We meet the main character, often they will wake up and find the whole world to have changed. We feel connected to them because both the character and the audience are knew to the world and don't understand it yet. In The Walking Dead, this is Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincon) who awakes in hospital after being shot.
2.The main character quickly learns about zombies and the new world. They meet some new people who may explain anything that they don't know yet.
3.The small group they they may have formed grows larger as they meet a larger group of people trying to surive.
4.The calm before the storm. The characters are relaxing, having fun and are quite happy.
5.All hell breaks loose. The zombies arrive, and lots of them. Mass casualties. Some die, some will be turned. From here on its a race for survival
6.They appear to have escaped the zombies, and the film will end, sometimes before, it will show that they aren't safe yet.

Thats were a zombie film usually ends, but as The Walking Dead is a series, after this point it is unknown what will happen next. All of the earlier steps happened in the first season. Will season too be a repeat? or will a way of the zombie world be created. They are some questions i am asking myself. And unfortunatly ill will be asking those questions until October, when season 2 of The Walking Dead is said to return. Will we meet new characters? how will they change? what will happen with some of the already ongoing storylines? I can't wait to find out. How about you? Post your thoughts below.
